| The
little known groundhog, “Strasburg Sam”, lives in the
Village of Strasburg, Ohio. |
|
He
does not predict weather in the same manner that the
more famous groundhogs have for many years.
When
there is snow on the ground, Sam is asleep in his
burrow. When Sam is wet, it is probably raining. When
Sam is in the shade, it most likely is bright and
sunny.
Several towns, in North America, celebrate Groundhog Day
and have weather predicting groundhogs. The most famous
is Punxsutawney Phil. Other well known groundhogs are
Buckeye Chuck, General Beauregard Lee, Staten Island
Chuck, Wiarton Willie and Shubenacadie Sam.
Buckeye Chuck, Ohio's official weather-predicting
groundhog, resides in Marion, Ohio. Sam is not the
official anything. Yet! |
 |
According to the
legend of Groundhog Day, the groundhog's behavior is
a way of forecasting the weather. If the groundhog
comes out of its burrow, sees his shadow, and then
disappears again, it means that winter will continue
for six more weeks. If the groundhog does not see
its shadow, then it will not be scared to come out
of the burrow and winter will soon end.
When Sam comes out of his burrow, it must be time to
eat. Sam is a natural, free range groundhog and is
not enhanced by artificial means. (Read more about
